Modular Greenhouse Gas Emission Model for Vienna´s Municipal Solid Waste Management

Although waste management is not among the most relevant emitters of greenhouse gases, it plays an important role in climate protection. Numerous studies have shown that waste management has been able to significantly reduce its direct emissions of harmful greenhouse gases. This was accomplished mainly by reducing the landfilling of biodegradable waste and by providing secondary raw materials or energy, which reduced the use of primary raw materials and the associated emissions of greenhouse gases.

The aim of the present project is to develop a calcuation model that allows determining the greenhouse gas emissions of Vienna´s waste management focusing on Municipal Solid Waste. The project is conducted in close collaboration with TU Wien – Institute for Water Quality and Resource Management and is funded by the MA48.
