Fossil Carbon Tracking System (FCTS)

Precise determination of fossil carbon dioxide for waste to energy plants.

VIRWa together with Genius5-Instruments offer a novel methodology to precisely determine the fossil CO2 emissions from Waste-to-Energy plants.

The Fossil Carbon Tracking System (FCTS) combines established methods and allows assessing fossil CO2 emissions with an uncertainty below 2.5%, which fulfils high regulatory requirements.

The Fossil Carbon Meter (FCM)

VIRWa has extended and substantially improved upon the methodology of the Balance Method (ISO 18466:2016) to determine the fossil CO2 emissions from Waste-to-Energy plants.

With the improved equation system, the Fossil Carbon Meter (FCM) delivers results with high accuracy, and automatically validates the results during start-up operation of the plant. One major advantage of the method is the realtime availability of results.

OBOMa -- Online-Tool for Optimized Bunker Waste Mixing and Operational Management of Waste-to-Energy Plants

Waste-to-Energy plants are typically receiving a large variety of wastes with diverse combustion characteristics. At present the differences in the composition of the waste received are partly reduced by mixing of the waste in the receiving bunker. Until recently no method was available to assess the degree of variability of the waste combusted and hence also no controlled mixing of the waste feed was possible. OBOMa presents the first tool to online monitor the mixing of the waste feed and to subsequently control and optimize it. Expected economic associated benefits with the application of OBOMa are in the range of 200,000 to 500,000 €/year.

Fossil Carbon Tracking System – FCTS

The method is based on a smart combination of two established methods, namely the Radiocarbon Method (EN13833) and the Balance Method (ISO 18466:2016). Thereby a tool (FCTS) has been developed, which allows assessing fossil CO2 emissions with an uncertainty below 2.5%, which fulfils regulatory requirements.
