Method Comparison for Determining CO₂ Emissions from Waste Incineration Plants

WtE Plant-Spittelau-Flötzersteig-WSO4-Simmeringer Haide

This research project focuses on the comparative evaluation of four scientific methods used to determine biogenic and fossil CO₂ emissions from waste incineration. The study is being conducted at three facilities in Vienna with different waste input: Spittelau, Flötzersteig, and Fluidized Bed Combustion Unit 4 (WSO4).

The methods under review include the Balance Method (ISO 18466), an extended version known as the Fossil Carbon Meter, the Radiocarbon Method (ISO 13833), and the Fossil Carbon Tracking System, which integrates both approaches. The aim is to assess the precision, reliability, and suitability of each method for routine CO2 emission monitoring under practical conditions.

The findings will support more accurate climate reporting and contribute to the refinement of standardized CO₂ assessment methodologies. Final results are expected in June 2025.
